Gerry Dougherty

President & Founder

Gerry formed the firm with one vision in mind: To help people who are standing at retirement's doorstep preserve and grow their hard-fought retirement assets by providing lifetime income strategies.

Gerry grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, in a middle-income family with five siblings. He attended local, public schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He holds a certificate program designation in Financial Management and Leadership, presented jointly in 2004 by The American College and Pennsylvania State University. He is a 1982 graduate of the Massachusetts State Police Academy, 75th MPOC, and served as a Massachusetts police officer for five years.

In January 1986, Gerry began a career in the financial services industry. He started as a representative, building and servicing clientele, before he was promoted into various management positions within large financial service organizations. In 1994, Gerry entered the ranks of executive management, where he remained for 16 years. In that time, he garnered a unique understanding of the industry’s inner workings, and unfortunately saw how products and customers were sometimes misaligned.

The 2008 market crash was a turning point for Gerry. He saw how the crash negatively impacted many retirees’ wealth, changing their lives forever and shattering dreams for retirement.

In 2012, he founded a new company, Boston Independence Group, focused on the unique needs of individuals at or near retirement, protecting their assets and allowing them to retire with dignity and confidence.

Gerry holds his insurance licenses in in Massachusetts. He is a long-time, award-winning General Agent. He has been nationally recognized by the General Agents and Managers Association, receiving numerous company and industry awards. Gerry is also a Registered Investment Adviser.

His radio show, Making Money Last: America's Retirement Resource!, airs Monday-Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to noon, on News & Talk Radio WCRN AM830, available on the TuneIn Radio app, or simply ask Alexa to play WCRN. You can also listen to Gerry’s economic commentary every Sunday morning, 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., as a regular feature on WCRN’s Peter Blute Show.

Matthew Schuller

Vice President of Investment Management

Matthew wants his clients to know how their money is working for them. He wants people to be educated about wealth management. The more they know, the better he feels he’s done his job as their wealth manager. Matthew is a fiduciary, which he takes extremely seriously and is a published author for Kiplinger financial magazine and other outlets. You will hear him say that most people have a product not a plan. Working with Matthew, you will see there is a big difference on what he considers a plan compared to others.

Matthew also spends some time traveling the country each year and getting paid on consulting some of the top advisors in the industry on his trademarked retirement process. He also has been asked to present to large financial institutions. While Matthew enjoys doing this, he loves helping and meeting with his own clients the most. He knows how important good wealth management is on a personal level, too, because he’s seen loved ones who ended up being forced to work through their retirements because of bad financial advice. He doesn’t want another family to go through what some of his loved ones have endured.

When he’s not at work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife, Ali, and his two boys, Beckett and Hudson. He also loves coaching, running, cheering on his Iowa Hawkeyes and doing remodeling projects.

  • Do you meet with people virtually?

While we prefer to meet you in-person at our office, we are equipped to meet and work with people virtually no matter where they're located!

Our office uses a video conferencing software called Zoom to conduct our virtual meetings.

Each virtual meeting is protected by a complex, unique password and we adhere to the strict security guidelines necessary to protect your privacy.

  • What makes you different from other financial advisors?

There are 3 main things that separate us from other financial advisors:

     1. We are solely focused on retirement planning. Because of that, we are much more equipped to handle the unique needs of those approaching or entering retirement to help ensure they don't run out of money or pay too much in taxes.

     2. We are an independent firm. As an independent firm, we act as a fiduciary and are not tied to one specific line of investments. We always develop our plans based on the investments and strategies that are in the best interest of each client's unique situation and goals.

     3. We limit the number of new clients we take on so we can deliver high-quality, personal service. We take pride in the work we do and the life-long relationships we develop with our clients.

  • Why should I consider working with you?

Great question! Let's start with why you shouldn't work with us.

If you're looking for someone who can beat the stock market, then we're not a good fit for you. It's impossible to time the market and that usually leads to underperformance. We only focus on the things that we can control and the risks we can plan for.

Our clients understand that retirement planning is a long-term strategy that requires a comprehensive plan and a strong team.

You should work with us if you want to help ensure you don't run out of money in retirement, are reducing unnecessary taxes through advanced planning, and leave a lasting legacy for your heirs without a huge tax burden.

  • Where is your main office?

Our office is located at 182 Turnpike Road, Suite 227, Westborough, MA 01581.
